Preliminary Design 60 Classic Ketch

Heres a typical "first pass" preliminary package we developed for a client seeking a classic looking cruising ketch. Two alternate general arrangements were developed.

This boat could be built in wood, fiberglass or aluminum depending on the owners preference (and pricing). An alternate profile was also developed. Click here to have a look.

Principal Dimensions
LOA 60-0"
LWL 45-10"
Beam 14-9"
Draft 6-0 (board up) 12-6" (board down)

Design 2677 65 Carbon Classic

Weve done two proposals for this particular client. This was the first. He came to us asking for a very narrow, classically styled sloop. During the preliminary design process we explored the idea of building the boat using the lightest composite construction methods possible and decided on a carbon/foam sandwich using epoxy resin. Systems would be kept to an absolute minimum for weight savings. Interior joinery would be built using wood veneers over Nomex honeycomb panels. A lifting keel was explored but abandoned due to the added complexity and the intrusion on the cabin in a boat this narrow.

The boat would normally be used as a daysailer with the occasional overnight. A full time captain would be employed with an extra bunk for a "pick-up" hand for long deliveries.

Principal Dimensions
LOA 65-0"
LWL 50-2"
Beam 12-0"
Draft 10-0"
Displacement 26,427 lbs
Ballast 10,572 lbs
Sail Area 1,938 sq ft

Click here to see the other design proposal prepared for this client: a larger and more modern interpretation. In the end the client purchased an existing flush deck daysailer, which is now for sale. Click here to access an article about her. I wonder what he will do next?

Classic Mariners Regatta

Points for style
Belle Starr sailed west to view the Port Townsend Classic Mariners Regatta yesterday. This event is for wooden sailboats. Wooden motorboats are welcome to participate in the event as a spectator fleet. Wooden rowboats, dinghies and kayaks are encouraged to participate in Sunday morning’s informal race.

The regatta on Saturday was light to no wind. Regardless, the Race Committee managed to get off the advertised two "races".  Long distance photos are difficult to take when you are sailing, let alone when your subjects are also sailing.

The pick of the shots are available on Dorymans Flickr site. I hope this gives you a sense of the day.
