Design 2413 C3 Stevens 42

This design is a derivative of design #2413, the Stevens 40 center cockpit. She is an aft cockpit version of the 40 with new styling, interior layout and extended transom. This was commonly done to utilize an existing hull mold. The boats were built by Queen Long Marine of Taiwan. Only 5 boats were built to this design, which was introduced in 1987.

Heres an article about the boats from Yachting magazine from 87. Please double click for zoom.

And the brochure.

And finally the plans.

A peek at her interior. Queen Long builds a great production boat.

Design 1959 C3 Palmer Johnson 34

We have made numerous postings about this very successful design, the S&S 34.  She is design #1959.  We have had a number of confused buyers or owners inquiring about this particular version, the Palmer Johnson 34.  Lets set the record straight.  The Palmer Johnson 34 brochure lists Nautor of Finland as the builder.  That is completely false. Like the Swans that Palmer Johnson marketed and did not build themselves, these S&S 34s were marketed and sold by P.J. but built by Michael Winfield & Partners. Ltd. of England (later known as Aquafibre International).  We know of at least 12 units sold through P.J.

The boats were identical to the boats sold abroad with the exception of an increased sail plan.  The "I" dimension is 2-6" taller than the English counterparts resulting in a sail area increase of 27 square feet.  Heres the P.J. 34 sail plan.

And heres a copy of the original P.J. 34 brochure.  Note the misleading credit to the builder on the cover page. Also note the LOA is listed as 33-7".  This was probably done for marketing reasons only and is not correct.

Design 1557 C3 Spirit

We have discussed the Spirit Class before and as shown in the above image.  The boat was designed as a flush-deck one-design class for San Fransisco Bay in the mid-1960s.  Although the class never took off the original Spirit was hugely successful and various sisters were built.  It has been difficult to track what boats were built.  Here is a list of owners and boats for this design in its various forms.

In 2000, Wooden Boat magazine published a ten page article about the boats (Wooden Boat #156).  Even here they reference the ever-allusive hull #6 as follows: A sixth boat is rumored to have been built of fiberglass in New Zealand.

I was finally able to track down this boat, also named Spirit (just to further confuse matters) and shown just above.  The boat was in fact built of fiberglass by the highly respected boatbuilder John Lidgard of Aukland in 1965.  She was built with a small, attractive deckhouse, the draft was increased to 6-10", a separate skeg and rudder were designed and her sail area reduced slightly.  Please note that the model with the small deckhouse was dubbed the Mariner Class.

Here are a couple of shots that give a peek at her underbody and a good look at her cockpit.

Here are the Plans.
